Description
The ‘NER’s Book of Standards’ prepared in 1908/9 illustrates the specifications for a wide range of lineside equipment and structures. These include fencing, gates and platforms for a variety of applications, buffer stops, road surfaces for goods yards, foundations for engine shed pits, turntables and water columns. Details for standard embankments, cuttings, bridges and cast iron notices are included. These fittings and features clearly stamp the company identity on North Eastern lines. This highly standardised approach and their widespread application by the early years of the 20th century is borne out by photographic evidence and their longevity resulting in many fittings remaining extant until relatively recently.
