Diverted Through Bishop Auckland
In this September 1967 view by John Boyes, we see a diverted East Coast Main Line express passing Bishop Auckland East Junction. The train has left the main line at Relly Mill, just south of Durham, and continued through Brancepeth and Willington to Bishop Auckland. It will continue along the former Stockton & Darlington Railway via Shildon and Heighington to rejoin the main line at Parkgate Junction, Darlington. The NER signal bridge formerly had another, lower, cross-member carrying miniature shunting signals, but this was later replaced by a couple of ground discs. The locomotive is D1516, a “Brush Type 4” diesel-electric, later 47 417, which is now preserved and can be seen on the Midland Railway at Butterley.
