Description
This detailed compilation was produced by the late Stephen L Bragg, and Eddie Scarlett, over a long period in the 1980s and 1990s.
It forms one of the most comprehensive records in existence of lines and stations in the area of the former North Eastern Railway.
In their original foreword the authors stated their aims to be the presentation of a complete and consistent picture of the extent of the North Eastern railway, including the Hull & Barnsley Railway, and joint lines, as it was at 31 December 1922.
They also expressed the hope that “one day this information might be used to produce maps of the system…” In this they also succeeded, because in 2005 the North Eastern Railway Atlas 1922 appeared, albeit in a limited pilot edition. This has now been digitised as well and is available to download.
North Eastern Lines and Stations was originally published by the association in 1999. It has long been out of print and copies are hard to find. The NERA Trustees decided that this information should be more widely available and accordingly have re-issued the book in electronic form without making a charge.
The opportunity was taken to add some information before release of the new version. The lists of line names in Tables 1 – 4 have been expanded to include the names appearing on the top of the relevant mileposts – often, but not always, an abbreviation of the name of the zero point. We have also added drawings of the standard mile, zero and distance point posts, along with some photographs.
