Description
Section 1of the N.E.R. Working Timetable for the summer of 1909 covers the company’s Northern Division lines to the north of Newcastle; the Newcastle, Berwick and Edinburgh main line with associated branches to the east and west of it, along with ex-Blyth & Tyne lines with the Tynemouth Loop.
The working timetable covers express and local passenger workings, as well as empty stock movements. Local services worked in push and pull mode by NER Bogie Tank Passenger engines (BTP) and a Driving Brake Composite carriage, were denoted as ‘Steam Autocars’. With through meat, fish and ‘braked’ goods working to and from Scotland and local goods workings the main line was busy. Additionally there were many local goods and ‘pilot’ workings to be fitted in. Pilot workings were another name for transfer or trip workings between a marshalling yard and local goods stations.
