Description
When there was a special event in a district, or when there was a bank holiday, larger demands would be made on the normal service than it could cope with, special arrangements were called for. So all of the operating staff (locomotive sheds, station staff and signalmen) knew what was to be organised for these specials, excursions and relief trains, a separate ‘Programme of Special Trains’, sometimes known as Special Trains Notices (STNs), was issued on a weekly basis for the NER’s Northern and Southern Divisions. This STN sets out the details for the many extra trains run in connection with the Durham Miners Gala of 1903, as well as a lifeboat demonstration event held at Tynemouth.
