NER Passenger Timetable, July 1880

£7.50

Description

This 102 page timetable sets out the pattern of service to the public in three main sections; through connections to other company’s lines, the NER’s own services including those on the East Coast Main Line arranged jointly with the Great Northern and North British Railways, and a programme for tourists. The NER was still rearranging its lines following constituent amalgamations some years previously. Sunderland area services had been rearranged after the opening of Monkwearmouth Bridge and Sunderland Central station the year before. The same was true at Hartlepool where a new through station had been built in 1877 opening up though working. At this point services from Saltburn and Middlesbrough were run via Fighting Cocks into Darlington’s North Road station as the Oak Tree Jct. to Darlington South loop was yet to be completed, with a new Bank Top station, in 1887. At Tynemouth all trains from Newcastle via North Shields and off the ex-Blyth & Tyne route via Backworth used the N&BR terminus prior to the opening of the new station in 1882.
