BR Passenger Locomotive Working, Darlington, Newcastle, Sunderland Districts, May – Sept 1948

Description

This facsimile publication is a reproduction of the North Eastern Region’s local passenger workings for the Darlington, Newcastle and Sunderland districts for the first summer after the nationalisation, covering workings from the banks of the Tees up to the Scottish borders inclusive of lines across the Pennines. Also included are Scottish Region duties that take their engines across into North Eastern Region territory. East Coast main line workings are covered by separate publications. The workings are arranged on a shed-by-shed basis with an indication of the locomotive class that would normally be rostered for the duty and the enginemen’s hours.

Also contained are passenger shunting pilot duties required at major stations to perform shunting duties. Unlike today’s railway and its fixed formation Diesel or electric multiple units in the steam age a basic set of locomotive hauled coaching stock could be varied more easily to suit expected passenger numbers by the addition of extra carriages. The considerable traffic in parcels and mail also required the shunting of numerous parcels vans to make up complete trains or by attachment to scheduled passenger workings as ‘tail traffic’.
