In 1907 the NER owned about 1,000 houses which were occupied rent-free by staff. 600 of the houses were occupied by stationmasters. It was proposed "...to abolish this arrangement gradually by making a proper rent charge for the houses, a corresponding addition being made to ... salaries or wages..."
