The virus crisis has caused some of the railwayana auction houses to change their method of selling. Great Central (Stoneleigh) has introduced more frequent sales with only 75 lots each, bids being placed on line, by email or by phone. This item was recently in the catalogue: A Newcastle and Berwick Railway document pouch padlock, the front neatly engraved Mr. JAMES McKAY, CONTRACTOR. NEWCASTLE & BERWICK RAILWAY. … Brass, 3″x2½”, the back marked: Regd July 4th 1844, Thomas Morris, Cheapside, London. (key absent). The padlock sold for £230 plus buyer’s premium and VAT.

McKay and John Blackstock were awarded the Belford contract in 1845, along with the Royal Border Bridge the following year.
