This month’s photo shows some “vintage traction” (not what it was called then…) passing the steelworks at Cliff House, just south of West Hartlepool. The locomotive is a BR 1Co-Co1 “Peak” (later class 45) with a Newcastle to Liverpool service which has run via Sunderland. John Boyes took the photo in September 1967. Although steel trains still run from Hartlepool, the vast South Durham Steel & Iron Company works seen here have long since been demolished.
